New Group Needs Our Help

Posted by in Uncategorized

We have received a request to add a new destination that is in dire need of some “Sundries’. FOB Tillman is a remote post with no toiletries being delivered there right now. They have 150 troops located there. They also support many smaller outlying units who live without electricity and running water. FOX News descibes it as follows:

FOB Tillman

“FOB Tillman is named after the U.S. football star who died in Afghanistan. It looks like something out of a World War I movie — rugged, old stone buildings that look like they could fall down. In fact, the roof fell in on a gym just before we got there, injuring a few soldiers.”

Their “Hot List” includes the following:

  • Laundry Detergent
  • Dryer Sheets
  • Body Wash
  • Any kind of nuts
  • Kool-Aid singles
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrushes
Let’s see if we can get some things rolling to them ASAP.

First Shipments are Enroute

Posted by in General

The Sundries for Soldiers Project is now officially underway.

The last few weeks have been used to get this site ready, formulate a plan to roll it out to the local car clubs and other groups and, finally, go get the first packages out to the troops at Camp Eggers, Afghanistan.

Well, happy to say the first two shipments went to the Post Office this morning. Everything went smoothly (once the “proper” Customs Form was located and filled out) and they should be on the way.

Here is what one of them looked like just prior to being closed for shipment.

Be sure to come back here and add a Comment to this post when you ship any boxes to help us keep track of our overall progress.

Note from Camp Eggers

Posted by in General

Today I received a note from Tracy that five more packages have arrived. She included some pictures so we can see, first hand, how we are helping. Here is her note:

“I wanted to let you know that I received 5 boxes today…three from
Richard and Jeannette.  The boxes are perfect!  They had a great variety
ranging from fruit roll-ups to shaving cream to toothbrushes in holders
to gum…everything is great.

I attached a couple of photos of folks here in my office picking up
items.  Please know that you really are making a difference to the
troops here in Afghanistan”.

Call for Readiness for Individual Care Packages

Posted by in Uncategorized

Occasionally we will be asked to send packages directly to soldiers located in the hinterlands of Afghanistan. These people have been recognized by their leaders as troops “in need of a package from home”. This effort is different from the SFS/Camp Eggers Project in that the box should be tailored to a single person. These packages should emphasize snacks, personal care items and things like batteries. If you would like to “be ready” to meet such a request please let us know via email and we will let you know when we receive such a direct request.

To help you get a feel for what “life” is like at one of these outpost locations please check out this trailer for the movie “Restrepo”. It was a 2010 Cannes Film Festival Award Winner. The movie should be available for rental from the usual channels.

Engaging Local Car Clubs

Posted by in General

Beginning this week I have been introducing this project to Car Clubs in our region. On Monday, July 11, I presented to the South East Regional Car Council in Savannah, GA. Fourteen of the twenty plus member groups were there and the project was well received. Several shipment “kits” were distributed. On Wednesday I presented to the Corvette Club of HHI with a similar response. Tonight, the Carolina Dreamers are on tap. Recogntion of the value of this project is an easy sell.
